UT police recruiting officer candidates

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The University of Toledo Police Department is looking to add new officers to its police force.

To be qualified, candidates must:

-be at least 21 years old

-have a valid driver's license

-meet minimum standards of physical fitness

-have a valid Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy certificate or be currently enrolled in a certified police academy

-submit to a drug test

"We are looking to hire individuals with strong character, judgment and commitment to safety to fill vacancies resulting from upcoming retirements," said UT Police Chief Jeff Newton. "University policing is a dynamic career and we're looking forward to finding the right individuals for this opportunity."

Chief Jeff Newton says working for the university as a police chief is a great job, and those who start working there usually stay until retirement.

"We try to have a really positive work environment here at the University. [We are looking for] someone that can be a balanced officer for us. Someone who can go out there and solve a crime, and at the same time provide the campus community with education and programming," said Newton

Written police exams and physical fitness tests will be held April 26.

Interested candidates are asked to submit an electronic application by April 16. Candidates who meet minimum qualifications will be contacted with testing information.

Finalists must successfully pass physical fitness, psychological and polygraph exams, as well as written and oral testing, and a thorough background investigation, to be considered for the position.
