Man dies while leaving meeting at city hall

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A meeting of hundreds of Montgomery residents ended in tragedy Thursday night at City Hall.

More than 300 residents from County Downs and neighboring subdivisions gathered for a meeting of the Montgomery Board of Adjustments.

The board heard from engineers representing a local church that wants to build a new facility along Atlanta Highway at the front of the County Downs subdivision.

During the meeting, residents from County Downs, Bellehurst and Fox Hollow voiced their concerns over the church being built at that location, saying it would lead to traffic problems in the neighborhood and along Atlanta Highway .

The board did not take any action to allow the project to move forward and once the decision was made, the large crowd started to leave the meeting room. A WSFA crew that was present at the meeting started interviewing some of the residents who would be impacted by the project when suddenly, people started yelling for help and for defibrillators after a man collapsed going down the stairs on the Monroe Street side of City Hall.

Medics were called to the scene and distraught witnesses reported that the man was unresponsive and not breathing.

Public safety officials confirmed that rescue crews responded to a cardiac arrest call involving a 76-year-old man at City Hall. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Other County Downs residents in attendance at the meeting told WSFA that the man was a fellow homeowner in the subdivision.

A spokeswoman for the Montgomery Police Department said it is policy not to release names on natural death cases.
