BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
NFL Hall of Famer Joe Namath has been named the grand marshal for the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, which is scheduled for April 25-27 in Birmingham.
Barber Motorsports Park and ZOOM motorsports made the announcement Thursday.
The former University of Alabama star led the New York Jets to their only Super Bowl victory and finished his NFL career with the Los Angeles Rams.
"We are honored to have another well-respected athlete as our grand marshal," Gene Hallman, President of ZOOM Motorsports, said. "His presence will add to the fun-filled weekend, and what a great opportunity for fans to get up-close with a true legend."
As the grand marshal, Namath will announce "Gentlemen, start your engines!" to kick off the race on Sunday.
"I am excited to be a part of this world-class event," Namath said in a statement. "I'm really looking forward to meeting the fans at the race, and finally seeing this motorsports park that I have heard so much about."
