Montgomery summit addresses needs of at-risk youth

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Community members in the Capital City are coming together to help reduce crime targeting at-risk youth.

Leadership Montgomery, class 30, held a crime seminar called iHope Youth Summit. iHope stands for I Help Other People Everyday.

Thursday's event brought together organizations within the city that work with young people. Organizers say they are focusing efforts on decreasing long-term crime in Montgomery and believe that begins with capturing youth before it's too late.

"The higher the level of education, the less likely it is these kids will be involved in crime, either as a perpetrator or a victim," said Dan Harris, County Commissioner for District 1 and a member of the Leadership Montgomery class. "Education, catching them early, and keeping them in school is very important in any attempt to address the crime level among youth that we experienced last year."

Leaders also believe providing jobs for young people will help reduce crime. In fact, Montgomery County commissioners are hoping to provide summer jobs designed just for students. Commissioner Harris says they hope to have information to give to high school guidance counselors by May for students to apply.
