TN Attorney General to appeal ruling on same-sex marriages

The Tennessee Attorney General's Office says it will appeal a federal court ruling that the state must recognize the same-sex marriages of three couples performed in other states.

Last week, U.S. District Judge Aleta Trauger issued a preliminary injunction barring Tennessee from enforcing state laws that prohibit recognition of the three couples' marriages.

The federal court's ruling applies only to the three couples who filed a lawsuit against the state in October 2013.

In Tennessee, marriage between partners of the same gender is prohibited by state law and by a constitutional amendment approved in 2006.

The couples married in states that recognized same-sex marriage but encountered problems in Tennessee.

In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, a spokesperson for the attorney general said, "We intend to take all necessary steps to defend the law. We have filed a motion for a stay and a notice of appeal."
