Hundreds attend St. Patrick's Day Mass

The mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is the traditional start of St. Patrick's Day in Savannah.

A host of Catholics including parade committee staff filled the cathedral before the procession of the clergy. Bishop Gregory Hartmayer set a spiritual tone for a day that is about so much more than the festival in the streets.

Many who come every year say it just wouldn't be St. Patrick's Day in Savannah without mass at the cathedral.

"As kids in Catholic school, our pastor was Irish so we always had the day off, but we had to get up and go to mass. As an adult, we don't have to, but it's a choice we make because it's what it's all about," said Nancy Gayvert, who attended the mass.

Ann Parker, who attended the mass, said her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother attended Monday's mass.

"It's just sort of carried on a tradition. Yeah, we love it," Parker said.

Father Gerard Schreck, rector of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, delivered the homily, which focused on the history of the Irish in Savannah and the U.S.
