Memphians face major road closures

(WMC-TV) - Mid-South drivers are going to want to avoid one of Memphis' busiest roads. Sam Cooper Boulevard will undergo months of lane closures.

The time has come to make some changes to avoid big traffic tie-ups now for smoother travels later.

Starting Saturday at 6:30 a.m. only one lane of traffic on the eastbound side of Sam Cooper between the bridge over Wolf River and the White Station Road overpass (exit 10A) will be open. That section of road is a little over half a mile.

Drivers heading east can expect major delays, according to Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Engineers say the upgrades are necessary to improving the Interstate 40/I-240 interchange.

The project is expected to last through the end of 2015 and when it's completed, there will be two additional flyovers and six lanes on Sam Cooper.

Saturday, March 15, only marks the beginning of the traffic changes. The weekend of March 22, the westbound side of Sam Cooper will be down to one lane.

The westbound lane closure is between the bridge over the Wolf River (exit 10B) and the White Station Road overpass (exit 10A).

This means that Sam Cooper will be down to one lane in both directions in the same area. The key is to plan now on how you're going to avoid this area. These closures are expected to last through the end of 2015.

Drivers also need to be aware of the ongoing weekend construction work on I-240 from south of Poplar Avenue to north of Walnut Grove Road that has been creating long delays and backups for drivers most weekends.

Drivers can take Summer Avenue or Walnut Grove Road, but should expect those roads to also be congested.

TDOT officials say the work is weather dependent, but the lanes on Sam Cooper will still be closed even during rain.
