Public invited to funeral procession for Ret. Col. Ola Lee Mize

GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) -

Funeral services have been announced for Ret. Army Col. Ola Lee Mize of Gadsden and the public is invited to attend a funeral procession in his honor on Saturday morning.

Mize passed away at the age of 82 after a lengthy illness. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for protecting his men from a heavy enemy attack during the Korean War.

Thursday, flags were flown at half staff to honor the war hero.

The Mize family received visitors from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 14 at Southside Baptist Church.

Mize's funeral will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, March 15 at Southside Baptist Church in Gadsden. Afterwards, there will be a full military burial at Crestwood Cemetery in Gadsden with a 21 gun salute.

The public is encouraged to attend a funeral procession for Mize on Saturday morning starting at 10:30 a.m. The procession will begin at Southside Baptist Church and continue to the Crestwood Cemetery. The Gadsden-Etowah Patriots Association is asking people who line up for the procession to bring American flags in honor of Col. Mize and his family.

The full procession is as follows:

Southside Baptist Church • 3975 Highway 77 Southside, Alabama 35907 north to Rainbow City, Alabama. Right turn on U.S. Highway 411. Proceed to the intersection of Albert Rains Boulevard (U.S. 411) and Walnut Street in Gadsden, Alabama. Proceed one block. Turn right on 1st Street proceed past Chestnut Street (at Gadsden City Hall) then turn right on Broad Street at the Memorial Bridge. Proceed on East Broad Street until arriving at Crestwood Cemetery • 2209 East Broad Street, Gadsden, Alabama 35903.
