HOOVER, AL (WBRC) -

Hoover's chief of police was a victim of domestic violence earlier this month, Hoover's mayor confirms.

Chief Nick Derzis was involved in a domestic incident at his home on Feb. 10. Hoover mayor Gary Ivey says Hoover Police investigated the case and determined Chief Derzis was the victim.

"The person who is alleged to have committed this offense was arrested on the scene and Chief Derzis contacted me to report the incident," Mayor Ivey said in a release.

The mayor added that Chief Derzis has not been accused of committing a crime or violating any City of Hoover personnel policies.

"I'm certain this entire matter is embarrassing to both parties, but this is a personal matter for Chief Derzis and a legal matter for his companion. This situation will now be resolved through our judicial system and it is not appropriate for me to comment further," Mayor Ivey said.

The mayor said the case will be handled "just like any of the other 200 or so domestic violence arrests" that Hoover police investigate each year.
