Alabama lawmakers want to make sure that nonprofit spay and neuter clinics can remain open.
The Alabama House of Representatives approved a bill on Tuesday that will allow veterinarians to work for the nonprofit clinics.
Birmingham Democrat Rep. Patricia Todd says the low-cost clinics are needed to address Alabama's pet overpopulation problem. The bill would also help by trying to reduce the number of animals that are euthanized each year.
State law currently states that veterinary medicine practices have to be owned by veterinarians. Rep. Todd says that a state board has threatened to close the clinics due to this law.
Representatives approved the bill by a 58-37 vote. It will now go to the Alabama Senate.
