Vestavia Hills hopes to help reduce some of the long lines for car tag renewals.

Monday, the Vestavia Hills city council voted to take part in a new law which allows cities to offer car tag renewals.

While tag renewal wait times have improved at the downtown Birmingham courthouse, on Tuesday Jefferson County commissioners Joe Knight and Jimmie Stephens pointed out to Revenue Director Travis Hulsey that there are still problems at the Bessemer Courthouse and the Center Point satellite courthouse.

"The problem is not solved," Stephens said.

Marisa Spyker of Cahaba Heights agrees that there's still a problem with the lines.

"Oh, I must have waited in line for three hours. It's kind of a nightmare. Sitting there trying to do it on my lunch break," Spyker said.

The Revenue Officer for Vestavia Hills will be trained on the new system in early March.

"We are excited about the opportunity to serve our citizens with this service. It's for Vestavia Hills residents only," Seagrist said.

Seagrist reminds everyone this is only for simple tag renewals, not new car tags or title transfers.

Jefferson County Manager Tony Petelos said lines are improving downtown but more needs to be done.

"We still have several positions to fill. We still haven't implemented the new software program. We are still looking at new computers, scanners and printers," Petelos said.

Commissioner Stephens would like to see another satellite courthouse open either in Homewood or Hoover. Meanwhile, Spyker is looking forward to renewing her tag in Vestavia Hills.

"It's going to mean a lot if I can get this done here. It surely will be lot quicker," Spyker said.

The Vestavia Hills service is set to begin in early April.
