Police: No seatbelts, child seats used in triple fatal Covington Co. crash

Alabama State Troopers have identified the victims in the fatal accident that happened Sunday night.

Officials say the crash left 30-year-old Mathew Kenneth Douglas of Andalusia, 2-year-old Ryan Gibson and 3-year-old Jordan Gibson from Swansea, South Carolina dead from injuries they received.

Two other passengers, also from S.C., 25-year-old Jessica Gibson and 7-year-old Haley Gibson were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The 2000 Dodge that Douglas was driving left the roadway and overturned around 10 p.m. on Covington County Road 31. That's about five miles south of Andalusia. Deputies say the crash happened off of Rockhole Bridge Road.

It appears that the vehicle left the roadway and landed in a ditch full of water. It appears the vehicle hit a gravel patch in the road, somehow crossed the road and ended up upside down in the creek.

Troopers say seat belts and child restraints were not in use at the time of the crash and everyone was ejected. The bodies of Douglas, and two of his children, Ryan and Jordan, were found underneath the car.

The mother and 7-year-old walked for more than a mile to find help, according to Covington County Sheriff's deputy David Anderson.

Alabama State Troopers are handling the investigation. No other information has been released.
