Alabama National Guard unit called to active duty

A unit in the Alabama National Guard was called to active duty, on Thursday, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Alabama's Company B of the 1st Battalion, 169th Aviation Regiment, out of Birmingham has been activated and will be sent to Afghanistan. The unit will deploy approximately 70 Alabama National Guard Soldiers.

The company operates the Army's CH-47F "Chinook" cargo helicopter, and will transport U.S. and Coalition forces in support of combat operations across the northern and eastern regions of Afghanistan. Company B will serve there for nine months and its support will be critical to the International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) mission of turning over responsibility of the country's security to Afghan Forces.

The unit will have a departure ceremony at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22. The ceremony will be held at the Army Aviation Support Facility, located on the Air National Guard Base at 5701 East Lake Blvd in Birmingham.
