Abused puppy recovers from chemical burns after being fed bleach

Concerned citizens have raised enough money to cover the treatments needed by a puppy that was badly abused.

"She was fed bleach," said Danielle Reno with Unleashed Pet Rescue.

An 8-week-old black lab named Bridgett was rescued then immediately rushed into surgery.

"She had scabs on her face. Her eyes were matted shut. We weren't quite sure what was going on," Reno said.

She even had metal shavings in her stomach.

"She had chemical burns on her face, in her eyes, in her mouth, down her throat and in her stomach," Reno said.

Unleashed found out about the puppies on a Craigslist add that read,"free, abused puppies." And while two of them looked OK, the abuse to the third one was overwhelming.

"I have seen a lot of abuse cases, but never one like this where it was intentionally done to a puppy," Reno said.

Reno said the police have been contacted and while the two sisters are up for adoption in a couple of weeks, it will be some time before Bridgett will get to go anywhere.

"We're really happy that she made it through her surgery. We just have to take it step by step," Reno said.

Reno says it will be months before Bridgett makes a full recovery. The puppies' surgery bills are already close to $5,000.

After the story about Bridget went public, concerned residents have made donations that will help cover the costs of Bridget's medical bills.
