Trussville restaurant owner uses Facebook to help family in need

TRUSSVILLE, AL (WBRC) -

A restaurant owner in Trussville hopes to help the family of a Jefferson County woman who was hit and killed by a car Sunday night.

Fifty-year-old Blanca Canales was hit by a car and killed along Chalkville Mountain Road near Grayson Valley Drive.

When Levert Jackson of the Trussville Diner heard about her death, he says it deeply affected him.

"Once I found out one of her sons was with her when it happened, it broke my heart," he said. "So I felt, 'Hey, let's see what we can do, this family needs our support and help, let's reach out to them.'"

Jackson just opened the Trussville Grill a little over two months ago but he already knew neighbors would help out the Canales family if asked.

"This community is awesome. I've lived in different states and I can say this is the most welcoming community I've been a part of," he said.

Jackson and one of his customers, Jana White, started a Facebook page, Trussville Cares: With A Husky Heart, to garner help. As soon as the request went out for donations of food, money and services like counseling, people like Polly McCombs responded.

"Heartbroken. Just heartbroken and when I heard three kids were left behind, and as a mother, just heartbroken. If it were me, I'd want somebody to care for my kids," McCombs said.

Having lost his first son 14 years ago, Jackson understands the jolting pain of suddenly losing a loved one.

"A lot of people aren't prepared for that, especially a young adult, so whatever we can do to help would be greatly appreciated," Jackson said.

Hurricane Maria will continue to drift northward, northeast of the Bahamas while we only experience some light, easterly winds and limited rain chances with our hot, humid conditions with daytime heating and remnant boundaries still the main forcing mechanisms for development of summer-like showers.

As Hurricane Maria continues to move north across the Caribbean toward the East Coast, an area of low pressure moves out of the western U.S., leaving an area of high pressure in control of the Southeast weather bringing only a few afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms with more hot, muggy temperatures.
