The Tuscaloosa County Homicide Unit says they have made an arrest in connection to a shooting that killed a man in January.
Twenty-six-year-old Demetrius Rashad Foster is facing a capital murder charge for the death of 24-year-old Joshua Gardner. The shooting happened on January 9, 2014. Police first learned of the shooting when Gardner arrived at DCH Hospital with a gunshot wound to his chest under his left arm.
Gardner stated he was on 20th Street when he was shot. He died on January 29, 20 days after being shot.
Authorities confirm Foster was on their radar as a suspect but they didn't have enough evidence to arrest him until now.
Investigators suspect Gardner, Foster and others met for a drug deal gone wrong in western Tuscaloosa. Gardner was shot several times in a car on 20th Street during an attempted robbery. He was taken to DCH where he passed away.
It was only then that authorities say witnesses felt compelled to come forward and share information about the shooting.
"I don't know if it's a coincidence. But the fact that Mr. Gardner died did prompt people to be more willing to come forward because of his passing," Tuscaloosa County Homicide Unit Lt. Kip Hart said.
Investigators believe that Gardner was involved in the robbery attempt but they won't comment on if he was the shooter. They say others were involved and they're working to bring them to justice too.
Foster was taken into custody on Thursday at a friend's residence in Tuscaloosa. He was taken to Tuscaloosa County Jail and is being held without bond.
