(RNN) - People age 50 and older may remember celebrating George Washington's birthday Feb. 22 of each year.
Before 1971, Washington's birthday was one of nine federal holidays celebrated on specific dates. In an effort to provide three-day weekends to federal workers, Congress in 1968 voted to move three existing holidays to Mondays.
The legal holiday for Washington's birthday was moved from Feb. 22 to the third Monday in February. From a federal viewpoint, the first president's birthday is celebrated along with that of Abraham Lincoln, who was born Feb. 12.
However, many now view Presidents Day as a celebration of all U.S. chief executives.
