JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

A driver who hit and killed a woman in Jefferson County Sunday night never saw her run across the road, the sheriff's office reports.

Blanca Canales, 50, was killed after running into the path of an oncoming vehicle on Chalkville Mountain Road near Grayson Valley Drive. Canales, from Grayson Valley, was apparently heading home when she tried to cross the road.

Witnesses said it appeared like she jogged in front of the car "as if she never saw it," Chief Deputy Randy Christian said.

The driver stopped when he heard a sound and knew he had hit something. He stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Christian called the woman's death a "tragic accident" and says no charges will be filed in the case.

It happened around 6:15 p.m. Sunday. Center Point paramedics responded and pronounced Canales dead on the scene.

"What an incredibly sad accident to report. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family and friends and also the driver involved," Chief Deputy Christian said.
