The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV
General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014:
Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! To all of you who were Good Samaritans during last week's storm. So of many you left the comfort of your home, whether first responders or citizens, to help those in need. Many opened your homes and your hotel rooms to complete strangers to provide warmth, comfort and a place where folks could rest or share a meal. You pushed cars out of ditches and shared what water and food you had with those on the road. Teachers in public schools, private schools, and day care centers took care of our children, many staying overnight, cooking meals, playing games, showing movies and generally making the children in their care feel safe and happy.
Local businesses opened their doors throughout the area, again providing warmth and safety for those who couldn't make it home. Restaurants provided meals to the cold and weary. Emergency crews…fire, medical and, law enforcement, city and county employees, utility companies, so many churches and service organizations in our area…so many stepped up above and beyond to show kindness and compassion for those affected by the weather.
I have read stories about other cities affected by the same weather where the outcome was different, where more anger and less, much less compassion was shown. However, put a challenge in front of Alabamians and you step up…you just do…always ready to help out. We have received hundreds of emails, phone calls, Facebook posts and tweets telling stories of your countless good deeds. God bless you!
