MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The big melt has begun, and roads across Alabama are beginning to see improvement. In Montgomery the roads are open and the city is beginning to return to normal.

The Mayor of Montgomery says, "I am very happy with our employees and our citizens. It was all about the safety of our citizens. Getting the word out was critical. Alot of things went right and we learned alot of things."

There is still a fair amount of ice on the ground in cities across the state and even though the temperatures are on the rise, it doesn't mean that roads are safe. Meteorologist Josh Johnson says, "Higher temperatures and sunshine will melt the ice but remember, melting ice isn't like flipping a switch, it will take time. It is still icy in many places."

Even though Monroe street downtown is the only street in the city that remains barricaded, officials are stressing motorists to still take precautions while driving.
