Metro Richmond Zoo plans March debut for cheetah cubs

The Metro Richmond Zoo says plans to put the cheetah cubs on display to the public in March are on schedule.

The cubs had a 16 week checkup Monday and all were gaining weight nicely, said zoo director Jim Andelin.

The exact date to move the cubs into an exhibit is still up in the air and will largely depend on the weather, but with all the cubs now weighing around 20 pounds a March move seems sound.

"I actually had contacted a few other cheetah facilities who have had success breeding them and asked what age they recommend," said Andelin. "It's going to be a really great display. They're running, having fun, climbing trees, it's really going to be an awesome exhibit."

The cubs are currently in a more private area where they were bred and born, which has fewer distractions. Zoo officials don't want to move them when they are too young to avoid stress to the mom or the cubs.
