(WMC-TV) – Paramedics were called to the Lakes at Ridgeway Apartments on Ridgeway Road Monday morning after a stairway collapsed injuring a woman carrying an infant.
Witnesses say the stairway collapsed around 6:30 a.m. as Linda Fleming was carrying an infant down from the second floor.
Her sister, Vivian Fleming, said, "As she walked down the second step the whole step just collapsed to the bottom."
The baby did not appear to have any visible injuries, but relatives say Fleming injured her legs in the fall.
Vivian said, "She said she can't feel no part of her legs at all."
Fleming says she called 911 and when firefighters arrived, they had to cut a hole in the apartment building's wall to remove the Memphis mom and the infant from the debris.
Fleming's older sister says she had a similar incident about a month ago when she claims problems with the stairway caused her to fall while she was carrying her infant niece down the stairs.
Dorothy Fleming said, "I fell on top of her and I injured my knee and she injured her back."
Fleming family members say in the past they've called the apartment complex managers to complain about stairway problems but they say they haven't seen any repairs done to make the stairway safer.
Action News 5 called the apartment complex to ask for a comment about stairway problems, but before we could finish our question, the woman who answered the phone hung up.
Since the call, Action News 5 has learned that the injured woman, Linda Fleming, was treated at the hospital and released.
As for the stairway, it is going to need some serious repairs.
