BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham's Design Review Committee approved the drawings of the two-story Birmingham Negro Leagues Museum.

The facility will be built next to Regions Field and Railroad Park and will include a restaurant and theater.

Clayton Sherrad, a noted Birmingham chef, has been an advocate for the museum for years. Sherrad served on the Negro League Baseball Museum Foundation. Sherrad said the museum will mean a lot to Birmingham and to the players who played the game.

"Here in Birmingham we've always had a rich history in baseball even today. Even today we have more living legends in Birmingham than the whole country," Sherrad said.

Sherrad expects the museum will be even better than the Negro League Museum in Kansas City, Missouri.

City officials hope to begin construction on the new museum by the end of year.

The first rain may approach during the pre-dawn hours in Northwest Alabama but these will only be a few isolated showers. An area of...More >>
