Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue is asking apartments and businesses to take precautions and prevent their pipes from freezing in cold weather.
Thursday, warnings went out to apartment complexes and area sprinkler companies. Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue says this became a problem during the freeze a few weeks ago.
In addition to protecting pipes, apartments should check sprinkler systems beforehand.
Sprinklers at several apartments and when they thawed, it caused a watery mess. That sent water flowing in to fire suppression units, which should only happen in the event of actual fires.
Over two days, firefighters responded to more than 40 calls of sprinklers leaking water.
The fire marshal says there were no cases where sprinklers failed during a fire.
