Ike Pigott, spokesperson with Alabama Power, says power outages weren't caused by demand but by equipment failures.

"It was widespread, every part of state. We had a couple dozen substations that had some type of issue somewhere," Pigott said.

Pigott says some of the outages may not have been related to the cold snap.

But officials with Cullman Electric Cooperative were worried about high demand causing a huge outage.

So the company used its Facebook page and twitter to help avoid that issue. Officials posted information encouraging it's 44,000 customers to conserve power.

"This was a record cold temperature. We had a record winter demand today but that was not over our capacity to be able to deliver power. And it wasn't as high as our summer peak demand has been in the past," spokesperson Brian Lacy said.

Cullman Electric Customers are being told to turn off lights and appliances they aren't using and reduce their thermostat by a few degrees.

Lacy says there was a small number of outages in Cullman due to equipment failure and they were fixed quickly.
