FAIRFIELD, AL (WBRC) -

The Fairfield City Council discussed the possibility of cutting their police department Monday.

At the end of the meeting, no decision had been made on the issue so officers will keep their jobs for now.

Councilman Willie Hardley, Jr. has suggested the change after some recent cases of vandalism and theft. One case even involved city property.

"We are obligated to do something," he said.

Hardley feels that the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office could offer more resources to the city if the police department is eliminated.

Officers tell FOX6 News that they are hard pressed to do their jobs while they lack the proper staff, equipment and have to overtime hours.

Mayor Kenneth Coachman defended the police department, saying it is about 30 officers short of where they should be.

"You thin kthe county will do anything better, you're wrong," Coachman said to Hardley.
