Bulger's Beat: 50 Christmas trees adorn Dickson County home

The joy of the holiday season, for many, comes from putting up and then decorating that Christmas tree. So, do you get more joy if you put up two trees? How about 50 trees or more?

Helen Edlin's favorite Christmas carol should be Oh, Christmas Tree.

"Definitely my favorite time of the year," Edlin said.

The Christmas season is the time to go overboard, and Edlin's elegant Dickson County home brings joy to her world.

"It tells a story, and it tells who you are from the heart," she said.

Every room is decorated for December, with somewhere between 50 and 60 trees.

All of this is a long way from life as a child with eight siblings and early struggles in Smyrna.

"As a child, we didn't have much Christmas or many ornaments," Edlin said. "We milked cows, fed the hogs and brought in a cedar tree and made ornaments. That's what Christmas was, and I loved it. But it wasn't enough for me, I guess."

She's much closer to "enough" now, and, yes, she hears the whispers that it's perhaps a little much.

"I hear that a lot of times," she said. "Probably from my husband."

Her Christmas collection is loyal to Hallmark. That's where everything she has comes from.

In 1973, Hallmark started making what it calls keepsake ornaments, and it's likely that no one has kept them quite like Helen Edlin.

"Yes, I definitely believe that it's the memories. It's memories of mine that I've had through my children, or through my nieces and nephews," she said.

And don't worry - she says she doesn't get her holidays mixed up. The decorations will be stored away by Easter.
