Memphis drivers experience delays, detours during Sunday travel

(WMC-TV) – Get ready for some expressway driving challenges in Memphis. Major long term road construction is planned for the I-40/240 interchange, which will make driving very congested.

At the overpass where Walnut Grove Road crosses over Interstate 240, drivers were getting their first taste of the new detours and how it impacts their Sunday morning commute.

Driver Sonny Salomon told Action News 5, "Not bad on a Sunday, but its looks like they're pushing people off the interstate here."

The reason is the massive construction project going on in the flyover area, has caused the closure of the highly traveled 12-C exit ramp from Covington Pike to I-40 East.

Traffic is being detoured to go past the I-40/240 interchange to the Walnut Grove Road exit in order to loop back onto I-240 to get to I-40 East.

Drivers say they have no choice but to try and roll with the new changes and many warn that if Sunday tie ups are bad imagine the delays that will occur during weekday rush hours.

Brennan Reeves said, "Well it gets very congested at times I'm going to work, normally go this way when I'm going to work and it gets very congested."

The advice for many drivers is to leave early for your morning commute. Construction in the flyover area is expected to take several years.

Driving through this area will become more challenging as the weeks and months go by, but some drivers say the road improvements will be worth the wait.

"I'm hoping that it's going to be an improvement and that we will get the opportunity to get the traffic flowing," said Sonny Salomon.

The 12-C exit ramp from Covington Pike to I-40 East was closed until 5:30 Sunday evening.

Starting Monday night at 8, there will be partial lane closures of the 12-C exit ramp at the I-40/I-240 interchange, which will last until 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
