Nick Saban, UA agree to 'long-term' contract extension

University of Alabama officials say a new agreement will keep Nick Saban as the Crimson Tide's head coach until the end of his career.

The university confirmed Friday night that Saban is staying at Alabama after reaching a "long-term agreement."

"We are very pleased to have this agreement completed," Saban said in a statement released by the university. "Terry and our family are very happy in Tuscaloosa. It has become home to us. This agreement allows us to continue to build on the tremendous success that we have enjoyed to this point - successes that have transcended the football field. We are excited about the future and the University of Alabama is where I plan to end my coaching career.

ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit and Cecil Hurt, who covers Alabama for the Tuscaloosa News, broke the news on Twitter Friday night.

The announcement ends months of speculation that Saban was the top target to replace University of Texas coach Mack Brown. Rumors have persisted for months that Texas wanted Saban to replace Brown

Gil Brandt of and ESPN radio host Paul Finebaum reported Tuesday afternoon that Saban had a contract extension on his desk that would increase his salary to $7 million a year.
