The EPA is meeting once again with residents in several north Birmingham communities.

Officials are continuing the conversation about the ongoing problem of industrial pollutants in the Fairmont, Collegeville and Harrimon Park communities.

Residents are learning the latest about the cleanup process of contaminated soil and the director of the Superfund division, Franklin Hill, tells me he's hoping cleanup will start in February. It's likely that will start in the areas with the highest levels of pollutants.

Of the 400 properties that need to be cleaned, there are 52 considered "priority properties." Hill says the contaminants include arsenic and lead.

The EPA also says they are meeting with the five companies who potentially caused the soil pollution. Officials are arranging agreements with those companies to hire crews that will remove contaminated soil, replace it and re-do landscaping.
