(RNN) - Gil Brandt of NFL.com and ESPN radio host Paul Finebaum  reported Tuesday afternoon that Alabama football coach Nick Saban has a contract extension on his desk that would increase his salary to $7 million a year.

The news coincided with conflicting reports about the future of Texas coach Mack Brown, whose team finished below expectations with an 8-4 record this year. Rumors have persisted for months that Texas wanted Saban to replace Brown.

Brown and his attorney denied the coach has decided to step down, responding to a report on the website orangebloods.com that said Brown is expected to resign later this week. Tuesday afternoon, Brown texted the website Horns247.com that he is in Florida recruiting and has not decided to step down.

But Brett McMurphy of ESPN.com reported that a source told him that Brown will resign, but wants to wait to tell his staff and players personally.

The Texas Board of Regents is set to meet on Thursday night.

The Orangebloods report, which cited two anonymous sources close to the UT athletic department and Board of Regents, said Brown would receive a $2.75 million buyout and would remain on the payroll in a significant role through the remainder of his contract, which runs through 2020.

Yahoo's Pat Forde and ESPN's Joe Schad both launched tweets on Tuesday evening that seemed to dispute the reports. Schad said "THIS JUST IN: Texas denies report that Mack Brown will step down as Longhorns coach. Board of Regents to meet Thursday," and Yahoo reported a source saying that Brown has not told anyone that he is leaving and there have been no meetings.

Finebaum said Saban's contract extension was offered last Friday but the coach has not yet signed it. He nor Brandt cited a source for their information.

LSU went back to work this week in preparation for the Citrus Bowl against Notre Dame. A win would be nice, but this is also a chance to get some freshman playing time to get ready for 2018. Well it'll come in practice only. "Those guys will get more reps. So I'll give them a couple of more reps at the end of a team period. It's sending the wrong message to our football team. It's all focus on winning the game. Exactly what we did last year," said LSU Head Coach Ed Org...More >>
