Conditions improving after latest round of snow, ice

Things may be clearing up Tuesday evening, but the new layer of snow earlier in the day made for a dicey commute in parts of Middle Tennessee.

A handful of weather-related crashes tied up traffic and had a lot of people watching the weather all day long.

Dozens of school districts, including Metro Nashville Public Schools, played it safe and canceled classes altogether Tuesday.

In Dickson County, overnight snowfall could not stop crews restoring service to customers who lost power during the weekend ice storm.

Darrell Gillespie sits in charge of the push to repair service.

"We're still working just as hard as we did two days ago," said Gillespie, with Dickson Electric System.

At the height of the weekend storm, some 12,000 customers in the Dickson area lost service - the hardest hit in the area.

Now, fewer than 850 customers remain in the dark, thanks to the work of 30 crews on the street.

"Well, we feel really good. Of course, now we feel still concerned about the customers who are without power," Gillespie said.

Getting those back online could be tougher.

In most cases, crews have to go address-by-address to fix individual problems like the toppled trees and tangled lines down the street from Robert Macks.

"It's been horrific. It's been bad. It's been bad since Sunday," Macks said.

Dickson Electric expects to have everyone back online by Wednesday evening, which is welcome news for those who can't see relief soon enough.

"Yeah, I think they're doing a good job. They're doing the best they can, I think. But, you know, I wish they'd hurry up and get out here," Macks said, laughing.

In spite of all the accidents on Middle Tennessee roads early Tuesday, there were no serious injuries reported.
