Pickens County wins Class 1A football championship

Jermarcus Brown rushed for a record 329 yards and three touchdowns as Pickens County High School took down Maplesville High School 38-18 in the AHSAA Class 1A state championship game in Bryant-Denny Stadium.     

The Tornados set 1A championship game records Thursday for yards rushing (441), total offense (471) and individual rushing yards to claim the school's first AHSAA title. The game also set 1A championship records for combined total offense (799) and points (56).     

Quarterback Devonte' Simon added 100 yards and a touchdown on the ground and 30 yards and a score through the air. Simon's touchdown pass went to the son of Pickens County coach, Patrick Plott, who shares the same name.     

Brown scored on runs of two and 34 yards before taking a fake punt 56 yards to the house in the fourth quarter to close out the game.

Tanner beats Washington County 21-13 for 2A title

Hayden Stephens rushed for 159 yards and two touchdowns as Tanner High School beat Washington County High School 21-13 in the AHSAA Class 2A state championship game at Bryant-Denny Stadium.     

The Rattlers are state champions for the second time and second year in a row, beating Washington County both times.     

The Bulldogs were trying to mount a game-tying drive late in the fourth quarter, but Deshun Freeman caught an interception that ended the comeback bid.     

Stephens scored on runs of 45 yards and one yard, and Tiquaveious Mayberry added a one-yard touchdown run for the Rattlers.     

Tanner racked up 209 total rushing yards and did not commit a penalty in the win.

Madison Academy wins 3A title 31-14 over Leeds

Kemoni Miller rushed for 168 yards and two touchdowns to lead Madison Academy to a 31-14 victory over Leeds Thursday in the Class 3A championship game.     

Madison Academy (15-0), which claimed its first state title last season, had 364 yards, all on the ground.     

Miller had 20 carries, with TD runs of 1 and 10 yards.     

Kerryon Johnson, who scored three touchdowns in last year's championship game, had seven carries for 93 yards. He scored on a 43-yard run.     

Tadarryl Marshall Jr. led Leeds (12-5). He completed 11 of 23 passes for 147 yards and a 28-yard touchdown to Jacoby Lockhart. He also ran 25 times for 139 yards.     

Madison Academy led 14-0 at halftime. Lockhart's touchdown catch with 50 seconds left in the third quarter cut Leeds' deficit to 21-14.     

Nathan Geis answered with a 45-yard field goal and LaMarukus Martin added a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth.

Oneonta beats Charles Henderson 28-10 for 4A title

Avery Reid rushed for three touchdowns and Oneonta High School beat Charles Henderson High School 28-10 Friday in the Class 4A state championship game at Bryant-Denny Stadium.     

Reid scored on runs of 5, 2 and 4 yards to give the Redskins their fourth state title and first since 2004.     

Terrell McDaniel added 163 rushing yards as Oneonta totaled 326 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Ko Powell completed eight passes for 127 yards and a touchdown. The Oneonta defense forced four turnovers in the win.     

Baylor Barnes kicked a 26-yard field goal for Charles Henderson in the second quarter, and John Johnson punched in a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth, but it was too late.     

Oneonta capped the scoring with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Powell to Brock Latta late in the fourth quarter.

Spanish Fort rolls past Muscle Shoals, 35-14 for 5A title

Spanish Fort High School exploded for 28 second-half points to beat Muscle Shoals High School 35-14 in the AHSAA Class 5A state championship in Bryant-Denny Stadium to claim the Toros' third title.     

Tied 7-7 at halftime, Spanish Fort got touchdown runs from Braxton Shabel and Tyler Johnston in the third quarter. Then in the fourth, LaDarrell Pettway returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown and Maurice Cole recovered a fumble in the end zone to put the game out of reach.

The Toros opened the scoring in the first quarter on a two-yard run from Mike Howard. The Trojans answered with a two-yard touchdown run by Zach Sullivan. Muscle Shoals added a late touchdown throw from Landon Smothers to Luke Smothers to cap its scoring.     

Spanish Fort outgained Muscle Shoals 384 yards to 213. Toros quarterback Tyler Johnston completed 10 of 15 passes for 219 yards.

Hoover beats Auburn 20-3 for state title

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Bradrick Shaw rushed for a touchdown and caught another as Hoover High School beat Auburn High School 20-3 in the AHSAA Class 6A state championship game in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

On a cold and rainy night, Hoover won its second consecutive state title and tenth overall, denying Auburn its first ever.

Shaw rushed for 53 yards on the night and caught a 39-yard touchdown from Jack Hutchenson in the third quarter that broke the game open.

Both teams combined for just 323 yards of offense.

Hoover opened the scoring with an Alex Elam blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone by Chris DeMoss.

Sage Ledbetter kicked a 35-yard field goal for the Tigers in the third quarter.

Shaw scored on the reception and on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
