Teenager killed in car accident in Hanover County

MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) -

A Hanover County teenager lost his life in a high speed car crash Wednesday night, hours before friends and family gathered for Thanksgiving.

Travis M. Simmons, 18, was a resident of Mechanicsville, and a student at Lee-Davis High School. In an interview Thursday, Simmons' father said Wednesday's crash was a terrible accident.

"He told me that he loved me every day," said Jerry Simmons. "I would just ask that everyone wear their seat belts, it can make a difference."

Hanover County crash examiners believe Simmons was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The incident happened around 6:15 p.m. in the 6100 block of Cold Harbor Road, near Richmond National Battlefield.

Investigators say Simmons' Honda Civic appears to have run off the right side of the road, and struck a tree. Simmons was taken to VCU Medical Center and later pronounced dead.

Investigators say speed appears to be a factor in the accident.
