BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A Birmingham native who's made it big in football is still making sure those in need have something good to eat this holiday season.

It took about six hours to hand deliver 140 turkeys and ham to those in need.

"This just kind of just came out of the blue right now," said Karen Giner with Pathways shelter.

She was surprised to receive a cart full of turkeys and ham. The shelter serves lunch to the homeless.

"Especially since it's so cold out this week, they are really going to appreciate a nice warm comforting meal," added Giner.

Comelia Williams made the special delivery dressed in her Buffalo Bills gear. While Marcell Dareus couldn't be there in person for the delivery, Williams says he helped make it all happen from Buffalo, New York.

"He has such a great big heart," said Williams.

Dareus plays defensive tackle for the Buffalo Bills, but every now and then Dareus makes time to give back to his hometown. He graduated from Huffman High School and played football for the University of Alabama.

"This is our way to giving back to our city," added Williams.

She says for the last two years she and Dareus have donated food to the shelter King's Home, but decided to take things up a notch this Thanksgiving.

"We decided to hit every shelter and home here in Birmingham," she said.

Williams drove rented van around the city Tuesday afternoon, dropping off at least five turkeys and five hams to eight shelters.

Giner with Pathways says the thoughtful gesture will go a long way for those who normally lave no food on their table.

"For days to come, looks like we'll have enough turkey for leftovers for a least a week. So we're so happy," Giner said.

Williams says she and Dareus plan to do a similar round of donations to shelters in Birmingham during Christmas time. Instead of food, they'll be handing out toys.
