Capacity crowd gathers for Bishop T.D. Jakes in Richmond

There was a capacity crowd at Richmond's Saint Paul's Baptist church Friday night. Thousands packed the church to hear Bishop T.D. Jakes.

The Fire on Fridays event featured music, dancing, and preaching from mega church pastor T.D. Jakes.

"You are the reason God sent me to Richmond," said Bishop Jakes to the congregation. "I didn't come to Richmond to preach. I came to deliver an answer to your prayers."

People came in droves to see Bishop Jakes.

"We thought we were going to be able to park in the lot here," said a parishioner. "But we had to park down the street. But that is okay. He is worth it."

More than 4,000 people attended the Fire on Fridays service. Officials say 700 cars had to be turned away.

"It so humbling," said Bishop Jakes in a one-on-one interview with NBC 12. "Especially after preaching nearly 40 years, that you would still be relevant enough from generation to generation that people would come out is very encouraging and very humbling."

Bishop Jakes encouraged the congregation to go see his new movie called Black Nativity. It opens on Thanksgiving Day.

"From the beginning to the end it is all about lifting up the name of Christ," said Gospel radio host Sheilah Belle of the movie. "So tonight is Fire on Fridays, then Black Nativity, then his next book…it is all about Pastor T.D. Jakes."

Bishop Jakes notes the movie stars Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson and more.

"And it is going to speak to so many people in a profound way," said Bishop Jakes. "Black Nativity…you have to go see this!"

Saint Paul's hosts a different guest pastor each Friday. Bishop Paul S. Morton will be the guest preacher on November 29th.
