HOLIDAY SHOPPING - Too many people start the new year deep in debt because they overspend during the holidays. As Black Friday approaches and people start preparing for the holidays, it's important they take the time to make a plan for their money! We talked with Rachel Cruz today about how to make a holiday budget and stick to it, what to do if you haven't started saving and how to avoid going into debt during the holidays. Rachel says make a holiday budget. Make a list of everyone you are buying a gift for this year. Put a dollar amount next to their name. Make sure to include extras like parties and gifts for coworkers. This year she's also introduced a great, free online tool to help your viewers easily plan for their holiday spending, www.mychristmasbudget.com <http://www.mychristmasbudget.com>. You can save your personalized link to desktop or phone. Rachel also says don't panic if you haven't started saving. Figure out how much you can spend and create your budget around this amount. If you're short on cash, pick up some extra work to make extra cash. Also, give of your time and talents. Let friends and family know your situation if you can't afford gifts. Don't go into debt for gifts. Put the amount of cash you plan to spend in an envelope. Once the money is gone, stop shopping! Avoid signing up for credit cards to get "extra" savings. Don't go overboard - your kids won't remember every single toy they received and they won't be traumatized if they don't get the latest "it" item.
