Vice President Joe Biden was Atlanta Thursday afternoon to deliver remarks at a naturalization ceremony for new U.S. citizens.

The ceremony took place at 2:30 p.m. at Freedom Hall at the King Center on Auburn Avenue.

Rolling road blocks impacted traffic as Biden's motorcade made its way through the city. The Georgia State Patrol shut down parts of I-20, the Downtown Connector and the surface streets surround the King Center.

Thursday's event is one of 120 ceremonies being held in recent days across the nation and overseas. Altogether, approximately 8,000 immigrants are becoming U.S. citizens.

Biden is trying to raise support for the immigration reform package recently passed by the Senate. His efforts, however, may be futile. On Wednesday, House Speaker John Boehner said that he will not call for a vote in the House on any immigration reform bills this year.

Boehner went a step further, saying the House will never take up the immigration reform bill passed by the Senate.

"The idea that we're going to take up a 1,300-page bill no one had ever read, which is what the Senate did, is not going to happen in the House," said Boehner. "And frankly, I'll make clear that we have no intention of going to conference on the Senate bill."

Many Republicans oppose the portion of the bill that provides for a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people living in the United States illegally.
