Owensboro hopes to see rebirth of landmark

Owensboro officials are hoping to see the rebirth of a landmark.

Owensboro is home to many long-time family businesses. Cambron Body Shop is one of them. They've been in business since the early 1920s.

But right down the street is another building that's worn many hats through the years- Gabe's Tower. It's been a hotel with a restaurant, apartments, office space and at one time even a 14 News bureau office.

"On Saturday night when my husband and I would go out to eat, we would always go to Gabe's Tower and we could sit in the restaurant up there. We could look down and see our sign," said Jane Cambron.

And the building is about to change again. Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne says the city has been working with the new owners to bring the building back to life.

Payne says the new owners plan to spend $6 million turning Gabe's Tower back into a hotel and reopening the restaurant.

"We're going to work with them to try to assist them with finding some parking. Eventually this is going to be the catalyst for future redevelopment in that part of our city," Payne said.

Payne says the city will help revitalize the area around Gabe's Tower the same way they've supported revitalization efforts in Baptist Town and Mechanicsville.

"I'm excited about it because it's one area of our town that needs attention," Payne said.

"We're really excited. I hope they do rebuild and make a nice hotel there. We can't wait," Jamie Cambron said.

The city says there is no official start date to begin the project, but the new owners have talked about beginning renovations on the inside before the end of the year.
