Some young dancers are getting down in their PJs after working hard to help others.

"It's just really fun to have. PJs are really fun to dance in," Aliza Kate Darlow said.

Pajamas are not the normal attire for the dancers here at the Birmingham Dance Theatre.

"We have a strict clothing policy. For ballet the girls have to wear pink tights, black leotard, hair in a bun always. For jazz tight fitting clothes so we can see their lines," Ally Scofield with the Birmingham Dance Theatre said.

But this week the girls and boys are getting a bit of a break from the norm and for a good cause. The dance studio is having its first ever canned food drive to help the needy this holiday season. And to get the kids involved, if they donate a food item they get to wear PJs to dance class.

"I think the exciting part of wearing PJs was because this is like a week they can have off and be comfy, have fun," Scofield said.

It's a great incentive. About 500 food items have been donated so far and the kids say it's just something about dancing in their pajamas that they love.

"It was fun because we get very comfortable. I like being comfy when I dance," Callan Elkins said.

And although they got to do something fun by donating to the food drive, they also understand the importance of giving.

"To help community, to help other kids in need for canned foods. Some kids just really need food to be healthy because some of them don't eat food a lot," Darlow said.

"I think it's very sweet to donate to them, it helps them a lot," Elkins said.

The canned food items will be taken to the Food Bank of Central Alabama to help fill the shelves.

And the giving doesn't stop there. Each kid that donates will also get their name put into a drawing. The kid whose name is drawn will get a $500 gift card and they'll use it to go on Toys for Tots shopping trip.
