A man who wrecked his SUV in a police chase has been indicted for the murder of a passenger who died in the crash.
A Tuscaloosa County grand jury indicted James Champion, 30, on murder charges relating to a car crash on July 30.
Champion fled from police after officers responded to a robbery call at an apartment complex on Skyland Blvd. Authorities believe Champion and others may have been at the apartments to get drugs.
Champion, a man named Ronald Hoover, Jr. and three other people got into a white SUV once police showed up and led officers on a chase. Champion ended up crashing the vehicle in front of the Super Skate on McFarland Blvd. East.
Hoover was thrown from the SUV and pronounced dead on the scene. Champion is now charged with murder in his death.
Champion was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail on Tuesday. His bond is set at $100,000.
