McNeese Cowgirls host SLC Soccer Tournament

LAKE CHARLES, La. – In the championship of the 2013 Southland Conference Soccer Tournament, No. 3 seed Southeastern Louisiana upset top-seeded Stephen F. Austin in a shootout to claim its third conference at Cowgirl Field on the campus of McNeese State in Lake Charles, La.

The two top defensive teams in the conference battled through 110 minutes of scoreless action and were forced to go to penalty kicks to determine the conference tournament champion. It was the second time in league history where the tournament championship went to a shootout, and the first time since Texas State advanced against Southeastern Louisiana, 7-6, in PKs in 1999. This time around, the Lady Lions used two saves by tournament MVP goalkeeper Hope Sabadash to advance 3-1 on penalty kicks for the second consecutive tournament match.

Sabadash, the 2013 freshman of the year, held the Ladyjacks scoreless for 110 minutes and made nine saves while facing 29 shots. The first-team all-conference goalkeeper becomes the first freshman of the year to also earn tournament MVP in the same season.

Southeastern Louisiana led all teams with six members on the all-tournament team, including Sabadash and forwards Brianna Singh, Kelsey Salcido, Kayla Vera and Casey Peacock. Stephen F. Austin had four members with forwards Chelsea Raymond and Zuri Prince, defender Megan Dunnigan and midfielder Brenda Salazar. Oral Roberts midfielder Jennifer Abernathy and Sam Houston State midfielder Tricia Mallory round out the 2013 all-tournament team.

Southeastern (14-3-5) claimed its third tournament title and first since 2009. The Lady Lions will await their NCAA tournament fate Monday at 3:30 p.m. CT during the Women's College Cup Selection Show on The Ladyjacks end the tournament with a 16-3-3 mark and finish second in the conference tournament for the third time in school history.
