Younger runners compete in the Kid's Rock Savannah run

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

More than 500 "little" runners were a part of the Kids Rock Savannah run in Daffin Park.

The event is a follow up to the Rock and Roll Marathon giving the younger ones a chance to have their moment in the spotlight.

Many children became full marathon finishers by completing a 25.2-mile training program prior to race day while others ran, walked or jogged the one-mile course during today's race day.

"I think it's so important to get kids involved in physical activity early. It builds their self esteem, it gets them out in the community, so it's a win win," said Michelle Gavin

The Kids Rock events have become a popular part of Rock n' Roll Marathons across the country.  7,000 school children participated in the program at one event in Tennessee last year.

As Hurricane Maria continues to move north across the Caribbean toward the East Coast, an area of low pressure moves out of the western U.S., leaving an area of high pressure in control of the Southeast weather bringing only a few afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms with more hot, muggy temperatures.
