Interim president has harsh words for Tuskegee students

There are still many unanswered questions about the future of Tuskegee University.

Students thought the interim president's first meeting would shed light on the university's future, but the focus of the meeting Wednesday night turned out to be quite a surprise.

Dr. Matthew Jenkins stepped in for former President Gilbert Rochon who resigned a few weeks ago.

Jenkins said he called the meeting Wednesday night for the sole purpose of telling student to pull up their pants and drop their attitudes.

It was a strong message with some harsh words. Jenkins told WSFA 12 News he needed to address the students and tell them to clean up their acts.

The message didn't go over well with many students.

"For the most part he wasn't tackling any of the issues of the university. He was focusing on how students dress. I don't sag or anything. So he wasn't talking to me during his speech," said freshman Darvell Smith.

Jenkins said this is a temporary deal for him and he has no desire to be the president. He declined a salary and requested it be given back to the university.

The university announced the presidential search committee Wednesday night.
