A downtown staple will soon close its doors for good.
The Lyric Hot Dogs & Grill has made a home next to the Lyric Theatre for 56 years. But as restoration on the theater continues, more space is needed and that includes part of the restaurant.
The spot will close in January and will eventually become an elevator and staircase for the theater.
Owner Andrew Collins says when the theater restoration began, he was told he would have nothing to worry about.
"Every time I asked them they said, 'Oh ya, we're working on it.' And I would say, 'You're not going to kick me out are you?' and they said, 'No you're a staple here. You don't have to worry about anything you're always going to be here,'" Collins said.
But Brant Beene with the Alabama Theatre says he never gave Collins a definite that his business was safe.
Collins says he understands that these things happen but wishes he'd known a little earlier. He says the last official day is Jan. 31 but he'll likely start closing up around Jan. 15.
