PELHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A scenic roadway near the Oak Mountain State Park and the Oak Mountain Amphitheater is being called one of the most dangerous roads in Pelham.

There is a "tunnel of trees" which creates a canopy and adds to the view of nature, but the small amount of room on the side of the roadway creates a driving hazard.

Grant Bergisman from Grand Rapids Michigan is biking to Florida to raise money for ALS. Bergisman called it a dangerous roadway.

"It's dangerous over there. I was coming up it, I saw someone going 60 an hour around the corner and you can't see around the corner," Bergisman said.

The speed limit is about 30 miles per hour. Few vehicles travel that speed limit. People who live in the area said the Oak Mountain Park Road is deadly with a number of fatalities over the years. There is a cross to commemorate the death of one woman down the roadway.

Still, there are those who don't want to see the trees removed as a safety precaution.

"I just think it's a pretty sight. I drive down there every once and a while. It's a pretty way to come into the park, stuff like that," local motorist Logan Bailey said.

Part of the roadway is owned by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Pelham is working with the Shelby County officials and the state agency to improve the roadway.

Bergisman enjoys nature but he believes safety should be a top concern.

"It won't hurt. It will still be scenic. You are not wrecking anything you are making it safe," Bergisman.

According to reports, Pelham Mayor Gary Waters wants to remove some of the trees and to establish a walkway along State Park Road all the way to the Pelham Civic Complex.
