Montgomery schools reach separation agreement with Pike Road

The Montgomery Public School Board and the Pike Road School System have officially reached a separation agreement, which allows for the transfer of money and resources to the Pike Road School System when it is up and running.

After months of working towards an agreement, the Montgomery School Board voted Tuesday to accept the  agreement. The vote came at the first meeting since the board accepted former Superintendent Barbara Thompson's resignation.

Right now, the students who would attend the Pike Road schools are currently in the Montgomery Public School System. The agreement will allow for those students to be zoned for Pike Road schools and the money to follow them there.

City of Pike Road Attorney Susan Copeland says the school boards worked to come up with an agreement that pleased both of them.

The Pike Road School System proposed an agreement with Montgomery schools during the summer, but then-Superintendent Barbara Thompson didn't like it. In it, Pike Road asked for three things -- to purchase Georgia Washington School, to allow currently enrolled magnet students who live in Pike Road to continue going to the magnet schools and for MPS to use its buses to transport students.

None of those items are in this final separation agreement.

"It's a very standard agreement. It's used pretty much any time a city school separates from a county school," Copeland said. "It mainly talks about how the revenues are divided and how we divide the resources that are presently in that school system like buses and vehicle and textbooks."

The agreement doesn't list specific numbers because Pike Road doesn't know exactly how many children they'll have yet. They plan to start issuing bonds for the school construction and hope to begin construction after the first of the year.

The Pike Road School will open in the fall of 2015.
