JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Renewing car tags in Jefferson County remains a major frustration for taxpayers, but hopefully not for much longer.

"It's ridiculous. As a taxpayer I have to come down here and sit in a line that spreads around the block for hours just to get my car tag," resident Tommy Young said.

Monday, Jefferson County Commissioners voted for a plan to install a new software program that is used in Tuscaloosa County to cut the wait time.

"I've been looking forward to it for a long time to get the software and to speed up the lines to get people out of here in a timely matter. They won't have to sit around and wait," Jefferson County Commissioner Joe Knight said.

County Manager Tony Petelos said the Tuscaloosa County Commission has offered their software program at no cost to Jefferson County. Petelos says the software program along with returning more employees to the revenue department will reduce the long lines.

"Their system will work in Jefferson County. We have a larger population, that is not going to be an issue. We are excited they have decided to work with us on the project," Petelos said.

One key factor is Tuscaloosa County's software will allow Jefferson County to scan car tag documents in seconds rather than typing in the information.

"We went to Tuscaloosa. I clocked one of the renewals at 57 seconds," Petelos said.

Jefferson County officials are hoping to have the new system and new people on board by the beginning of January of next year.
