BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham police say a two-year-old boy was injured after accidentally shooting himself on Sunday.

Police say the child found the gun in his mom's purse and accidentally shot himself in the side. His injuries were serious, but he is expected to full recover.

The shooting happened around 2:45 p.m. Sunday at an apartment in the 7500 block of 66th Court Way South in the Gate City housing community.

At this point, the mother is not expected to be charged. Police believe the shooting was an accident, but they are continuing to investigate the case. They are also urging parents to keep guns out of the reach of children.

"If you're going to keep it in the purse, put the purse in a secure location, away from the child. Don't assume the child can't get to it and leave the child alone in the room with the weapon. You have to take the extra steps to ensure the child's safety," Sgt. Johnny Williams said.

Williams says if you have a gun, you should keep it locked up or buy a lock for it.
