BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Many cries of "Welcome home!" echoed through the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport Thursday as a number of Air National Guard members returned home.

The members of the 117th Air National Guard have just completed a six-month tour in Kuwait. And no one was happier to be home than Staff Sgt. Michael Merimberga who was met by his wife and young daughter.

"I didn't recognize my daughter at first...she's grown so much, all this hair and she's tall and talking. She's just grown up so much and my wife has changed too...she's been working out," Merimberga said.

For all the wives and families this is a happy time filled with hugs, handshakes and pats on the back. Most have been in touch only through Skype and Facebook during this most recent tour.

"Gonna enjoy couple of weeks off and reintegrate...seeing the whole family again...eat a good meal and go from there," Merimberga said.
